BRIGHTEN UP: YELLOW

Growing up, my mom decorated with all things yellow and tree of life themed.  To this day, her taste remains the same.  Classic, warm, and welcoming are all descriptions that come to mind when I think of the yellow rooms at my parent's home.  Our house was positioned so that it received both the morning light on the front and the afternoon light on the back.  In the summer the sunlight was shaded by the full trees, but in the wintertime the trees were bare, allowing these rooms (particularly the living room) to take on a stunning late afternoon glow.  On winter afternoons, my mom could be found with her companion (Prudence the Pug) reading or catching up on emails, in this sun filled room.  It is spaces like these that can help us get through the gray days ahead.  Color can affect our daily emotions and behaviors, so why not go with a color that makes you happy?

With this in mind, I recently designed a yellow guest bedroom for one of my clients, which got me thinking about color and trends.  We seem to be stuck in a navy and gray rut.  I think this color combination can be very beautiful, but does everything have to be in these colors?  With this in consideration, I thought I would share inspiration for bright and cheerful yellow rooms.

YELLOW: LIMONE

Five years ago I completed my study abroad in Rome, Italy. As an architecture and art history major, I could not have asked for a better place to live and learn. In Rome, historic structures such as the Forum and Colosseum are juxtaposed by modern wonders, such as Richard Meier's Ara Pacis.  Art museums and historic frescos are abundant.  And the food is fantastico!  The city of Rome is rich in culture and tradition, making it a wonderful place to visit.

One of my favorite things about Rome were the lemon trees.  Often potted and flanking entry ways, or planted along stone fences.  These delicate trees added a special touch.  As my stay in Italy went on, these trees went from all green to spotted with bright yellow fruit.  Many homes and structures in Rome are stucco and painted warm colors such as orange, yellow, or creamy white.  There was something very breathtaking about the late day sun on these structures with their lemon trees nearby.  If you are fortunate enough to have the space and sunlight, I recommend adding a lemon tree either indoors or out.

YELLOW: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE

This morning I am dreaming of yellow.  Some may find this hard to believe with the dreary rainy day that we are having in Boston.  But, I can not get Rihanna's dramatic Met Gala cape out of my mind.  This stunning warm yellow piece rocked the red carpet with delicate embroidery and embellished fur edges.  In honor of Springtime and Rihanna's appearance last night, I will share all things bright and yellow this week.

THINK SPRING: COLOR

Over the next couple of weeks flowers will bloom, robins will serenade our mornings, and trees will grow chartreuse baby leaves.  The time to replace heavy cashmere wardrobes, with light and colorful springtime attire will arrive.   This season, designers are featuring an array of candy colored tones.  One of my go-to sources for colorful springtime attire is JCrew.  The collection ranges from pink silk shorts to lavender lightweight blazers, and is the perfect place to pick up some color this spring.
