OBSESSION: SKIRTED TABLE

While recently reading a few of my favorite design books, I stopped and asked myself "what do I like about these spaces?"  At this moment, I realized that most of the rooms featured skirted tables.  In the past, I have seen this design in frumpy floral patterns, but with solid colors and tailored details these tables take on a fresh look.

Since discovering this obsession, these skirted tables seem to be everywhere. The design is quite brilliant.  If you have a boring or old table, throw on a skirt.  This design also lends itself to seasonal updates.  Maybe you want a slightly darker and patterned skirt for the wintertime or a crisp white skirt for the summertime. Here are a few things to keep in mind, if you are planning to design a skirted table for your home:

Tastefully Tailored: Your skirted table should not look like someone threw a table cloth over the top.  Tailored details are a must.

Pretty Pleats: Add inverted pleats for a timeless tailored look.

Pattern in Moderation: Select a fabric with little or no pattern.  I am typically drawn to skirted tables in solid fabrics, but if you prefer a pattern, try a tone on tone damask or a subtle stripe.

It's in the Details: If you are planning to add a skirted table in a solid or subtle patterned fabric, I suggest adding a trim or banding detail to the bottom edge or pleats.  This will help add a decorative element as well as accentuate any tailored details.

A skirted table is a quick and easy way to add glamour.  This new obsession may even find its way into my home this spring, if it does, I will be sure to share.  In the meantime, here is a bit of skirted table inspiration:

CABLE KNIT: OBSESSION

As cooler weather starts to settle in, I find myself digging through my sweaters for cable knits.  This classic look is great for weekend errands or midweek in the office.  Below you will see an array of pairings, sure to inspire your late September outfits.  As you can see I tend to favor cable knits in white and off-white, but other colors are good too!

THIS MONTH'S OBSESSION: LEAFY GREEN

This month I am loving leafy green fabrics and wallcoverings.  Perhaps this is due to India Hicks’s book Island Style or maybe it is the thought of hot summer days.  Paired with rattan baskets, summery sisals, and gold hardware,  they are the perfect graphic element to any room.  Here is some pre-weekend leafy green inspiration.

LEATHER: FASHION OBSESSION

This season I'm obsessing over all things leather.  Bags, boots, skirts, dresses, and pants.  Whether it's a simple detail on the edge of a pocket or a full dress, leather is a must-have.  I've noticed a recurring theme with my Fall leather obsession...black.  This chic and classic material, pairs well with a crisp white blouse, a gray cashmere sweater, or a black blazer.  Here is a bit of  inspiration.

WHITE ON WHITE: OBSESSION

I love white on white during any time of the year, but especially in the summertime.  Summertime favorites include breezy white interiors, cool white fashion, and white sun bleached  treasures from the seaside.  White has always been a favorite color of mine.  Maybe this is because there are so many different kinds of white.  Cool whites with a hint of blue to warm creamy whites, each variation leading to a different effect.

One of my favorite sources of inspiration for summer white is the seaside.
Throughout my apartment and at my parent's house, I have numerous collections of seashells, stones, and other treasures.  Some of  my collections include beautifully colored shells, but my favorites tend to be all white.  Sun bleached oyster shells fill a canister at my bedside, a white rock collection serves as the perfect bookend on my bookshelf, and three white sea urchins sit on a shelf.  I just can't seem to get enough of white on white!
