BLUE & WHITE: THE LAST HURRAH

As the hours of sunlight begin dwindle and the remaining beach days fade, I find myself clinging to that summer feeling for as long as possible.  Labor Day has always felt like the last hurrah of summer.  Growing up, my school was one of the select few that began before Labor Day; a schedule I always considered to be the most preposterous way to start the school year.  With this early start I used to pretend that those first few days of school were practice, they didn't mean anything, and soon I would soon be back enjoying summer.
Here I am, years later and I still feel the need to cling to summer.  As a final hurrah, I have decided to feature blue and white this week.  The combination of blue and white is a longtime favorite of mine.  This crisp and often nautical look has timelessness to it unlike any other color arrangement.

Above, are photographs of one of my favorite seaside interiors by Victoria Hagan.  Here blue and white create a crisp and classic, nautical living space.  I love Victoria Hagan's use of shiny white walls with contrasting dark metal and wood finishes.  Additionally, the area rug compliments this space as a nautical graphic element, leading visitor's eye to the exterior seaside views.

Whenever I see this room, I want to sit back and enjoy the outside view. I picture myself enjoying a warm summer evening on one of these chairs, with a cool drink in hand, looking out on the harbor in the distance.  Finally my summer is complete.

I have always loved shoes. My current obsession is the JCrew Italian ballet flat, available in a wide variety of colors to embellish any outfit, during any season. www.jcrew.com

If you’re looking for something a little more exotic, I recommend these favorite ballet flats by London Sole.

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS: SEASIDE

Before I was a year old, my parents took me to the ocean for my first seaside experience.  As the years passed our vacations became a tradition and something my brothers and I looked forward to during our summer vacations.  To this day, there is nothing else that gives me the same pleasure and excitement. The nostalgic smell of salt filled air and the ever-changing landscape is one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS: COLORED PENCILS

One of my most memorable Christmas presents growing up was a box of Prismacolor colored pencils.  I remember carefully unwrapping the plastic covering, to reveal the pristine black box.  I was in awe. The fresh smell of wood drifted through the air as each perfectly shaped edge exposed its inner circle of color. Within the box, all 120 pencils stood ready for the hours of creativity ahead of them.

I took great care of my new gift, spending many hours sharpening each point to perfection, before carefully arranging the collection.   My drawing interests evolved quickly; beginning with childhood images of spiders and sunshines, to intricate baskets of flowers and elaborate landscapes.

INTRO: ABOUT AGA

My name is Alexandra Aquadro and I am a twenty-something-year-old finding my way in the world of art and design.  My love of art and design began at a young age in my family home; a nineteenth century, colonial house, to which my parents still call their “work in progress.”  Inspiration came easy; the family room coffee table was always covered in clippings of inspirational interiors, fabric samples, and paint chips.  Naturally, I soon began to enjoy participating in the design process of my home.  I remember spending hours looking through books of wallpaper samples, in search of the perfect pattern for my bedroom. This soon led to my other interests of painting, drawing, and fashion.

I currently live in Boston, Massachusetts and work for a residential interior design firm. Whether I am attending an art opening, visiting the Boston Design Center or reading a magazine, I am always looking for new inspiration.  This blog is my way of sharing what inspires me, and my experiences in the world of art and design. Enjoy! AGA
